FAQ

Multimodal

The best multimodal datasets for vision-language models

Image-text pairs and visual instruction data — what each set contains, how it is licensed, and which models it suits.

Vision-language models need paired image and text, and the pairing quality matters far more than the pair count. These are the open sets worth starting from, with their licences stated as published.

A multimodal dataset can mean several quite different things, and the distinction decides whether a set is useful to you. Caption datasets pair one image with one short description, and suit contrastive pretraining. Visual question answering sets pair an image with a question and an answer, and suit instruction tuning. Interleaved document sets preserve the original ordering of images and text on a page, which is what you need for models that reason over documents rather than over photographs.

The practical warning for this category is that published counts are often the number of pairs before filtering, and several of the largest sets contradict their own names — one dataset named for 200 million images (BLIP3-OCR-200M, not on this list) shows about 96 million rows, and MAmmoTH-VL Instruct 12M, below, shows 37 million rows. Where that happens below, the entry says so rather than repeating the name's figure.

Dark-background histogram of clip_similarity_vitb32: cosine similarity from 0 to 0.6 on the x-axis and counts up to 80M on the left axis, with a bell-shaped distribution peaking at just over 60M around 0.29 to 0.31, and a cumulative line that reaches about 750M by 0.44.
How closely COYO-700M's images match their alt-text, scored per pair with CLIP ViT-B/32: a bell curve of cosine similarity centred near 0.3, mean 0.29, with a tail of weakly matched pairs below 0.2. COYO publishes the score with every pair, so where you set the cut-off on this curve decides how much of the corpus you keep. Image (cropped): kakaobrain/coyo-dataset · CC BY 4.0 (dataset repository)

Each image's negatives are the other captions in its batch: a batch of N gives it N−1 of them, and at CLIP's original batch size of 32,768 that is more than 32,000 per image.

Top: a box headed 'Example of interleaved image-text documents' with two small photographs, a lorry and two people working at a bench, set mid-sentence in text about standards of analog video. Bottom: a web page feeding a pipeline of real-world data extraction into text and image stores, vision expert models producing captions and tags, hierarchical retrieval and image-semantic augmented generation, ending in 'Realistic Text' and 'Synthetic Text'.
Interleaved web documents keep images in the flow of the text, but the sentence beside a picture is rarely a description of it — here a lorry sits next to a line about analogue video. RealSyn retrieves real text and generates synthetic captions to turn such pages into pairs, which is why a document set and a caption set are not interchangeable. How this list was put together

Shortlisted from the 45 datasets in Dataset Finder's verified set of 434 open datasets tagged “Multimodal / vision-language”. Where the theme holds more than twelve, we prefer datasets whose licence is stated unambiguously and whose published scale is largest, so that the list is usable rather than merely long.

Sizes and licences come from each dataset's own documentation, vague wording included. Where we found a re-upload or catalogue card stating a licence that the original release contradicts, the entry gives the original terms and says so. The comparison table abbreviates licences to standard identifiers and marks vague ones as unclear.
