Tabular datasets for machine learning

Structured rows and columns — the format where gradient boosting is still the baseline to beat for deep learning, and why that matters for your data budget.

Tabular data is the most common format in real organisations and the one where the deep learning revolution has been least decisive.

It is worth knowing before you plan a project that gradient-boosted trees remain highly competitive with neural networks on tabular problems and remain the baseline to beat, though pretrained models such as TabPFN now lead on small tables. That has two practical consequences: your baseline should be a boosted tree model, and you likely need far less data than a deep learning framing would imply.

The work in tabular machine learning is mostly feature engineering and data quality rather than architecture. Missing values, categorical encoding, outliers, inconsistent units, and the leakage risk from features that would not be available at prediction time — these determine results far more than model choice. The leakage risk is the serious one: a feature computed after the outcome it predicts will produce an excellent score and a useless model.

A binary tree diagram captioned 'Leaf-wise tree growth'. The root splits into children and the arrows show growth continuing from whichever leaf offers the largest loss reduction, producing a deep and visibly unbalanced tree rather than a uniformly filled one.
Leaf-wise growth splits wherever the loss drops most, rather than level by level — LightGBM's way of getting more accuracy per tree, and the reason it needs a depth limit on small tables. Image: microsoft/LightGBM · MIT repository

Licences in this shortlist — computed from the 9 datasets below. Red marks licences that are unclear or restricted.
Five columns of five stacked boxes. In each column one box is a coloured fold (Fold1 in the first column, Fold2 in the second, through Fold5 in the fifth) and the other four are labelled Train; an arrow labelled Combine leads to a final column stacking Fold1 to Fold5 in their colours.
Leakage can hide inside an encoding. A target encoder fitted on the whole training table has already seen each row's own outcome; cross-fitting encodes every fold using statistics learned from the other four, so no row's feature contains its own label. Bank Marketing

Tabular
Size
4 CSV files: bank-full with 45,211 rows and 17 columns, and bank-additional-full with 41,188 rows and 20 inputs plus the target
Licence
CC BY 4.0 (UCI Machine Learning Repository)

Four CSV files, the largest holding 45,211 rows (a later version has 41,188 rows with 20 inputs including economic context), recording a Portuguese bank's telephone marketing campaigns and whether each customer subscribed to a term deposit. A classic tabular classification benchmark. UCI's original release is CC BY 4.0; the Apache 2.0 tag comes from a Kaggle re-upload.

What to train on it

Training supervised classification models, targeting campaigns at likely subscribers, and studying how socio-demographic factors relate to banking behaviour.

A bubble chart of average rank from 1 to 17 (lower is better) on the horizontal axis against training time on a log scale on the vertical axis. TabPFN v2 sits furthest left at about rank 4.8 with the lowest time; MNCA-ens, TabM and TabR cluster at the top between ranks 5.5 and 7.5 at about 500 seconds; CatB and XGB, in green, sit near ranks 7 and 8 at roughly 15 and 2 seconds; RForest, MLP, LR, KNN and Dummy trail to the right.
Average rank across TALENT's classification and regression tasks (lower is better) against average training time in seconds; circle size is model size. CatBoost and XGBoost sit near the front at seconds per fit, while the deep models ranked above them, such as TabM, take minutes. The pretrained TabPFN v2 ranks best, though TALENT's toolbox limits it to 10,000 training rows. Image: LAMDA-Tabular/TALENT · MIT repository

A lollipop chart of variable importance from 0 to 100: duration at 100, then balance, age, day and poutcome-success between about 27 and 37, pdays and campaign between 10 and 15, and housing, previous and month-March below 7.
Random-forest importance of each input in the Bank Marketing data (the 45,211-row bank-full version), top ten of 42 shown. Call duration dominates, yet it is only known once the call has ended, so it cannot help decide whom to call: a feature that scores well offline and does not exist when the prediction has to be made. How this list was put together

Found by searching Dataset Finder for datasets whose documentation describes the task, then checked by hand. A keyword match is not a fit — the first pass picked up a coral survey for the depth-estimation list because it was recorded below fifty metres — so every entry was read against what this page covers, and the ones that matched a word without matching the task were removed.

Sizes and licences come from each dataset's own documentation, vague wording included. Where we found a re-upload or catalogue card stating a licence that the original release contradicts — a CC0 tag on Flickr photographs, MIT on data whose terms require a signed agreement — the entry gives the original terms and says so. The comparison table abbreviates licences; hover a cell for the full wording.
